Usain Bolt breaks 100m record: Jamaica owns it, again!

It’s official, Jamaica again owns the 100m world record after Usain Bolt today ran 9.72 seconds to beat compatriot Asafa Powell’s previous world record of 9.74.

He was running at the Reebok grand prix meeting at Icahn Stadium, New York, and beat 100m world champion Tyson Gay of the United States into second with a time of…who cares (9.85).
What makes Bolt’s achievement even more remarkable - coming from an island of just 2.7 million people that has produced so many great sprinters - is that this Bolt, as a 200m runner, is relatively new to this distance.

On top of that, both Bolt and Powell choose to remain and train in Jamaica - not at more ‘high-tech’ facilities in the United States.

Earlier in May Bolt ran 9.76 at the National Stadium in only his third competitive 100m race, astounding the crowd, and watching from the stands he looked comfortable doing it.

My friend next to me, who had himself run 100m at Champs, claimed the time was wrong.

“He can’t be running that fast!”

He just ran faster

Beenie Man trial put off

The trial into the tax evasion case against popular dancehall artiste Beenie Man was yesterday put off until June 30.

This happened after Resident Magistrate Owen Parkins was not available to hear the matter when it was called up in the Kingston Tax Court.

Trial into the case against the deejay, whose real name is Moses Davis, began last month with two witnesses from the tax department testifying in the matter.

The artiste, who was arrested on a warrant in October 2007 after failing to turn up for a hearing of the case, is alleged to owe the state close to $48 million in taxes between the late 1990s and early 2000, at which time the entertainer was signed with Shocking Vibes and Patrick Roberts, his former manager.

The tax authorities allege that Davis failed to pay over $29,290,116 in back taxes and $18,641,254 in penalties, both figures reaching a total of $47,931,371 during this period.
Hearing in the matter will resume next month.

Mavado + Nike: Faster than a Bullet

Here’s an update on the reported collaboration between Nike and controversial Dancehall artist Mavado.

After First released the story, a lot of people doubted the authenticity of the claim but here’s a press statement from Alliance Entertainment on the limited edition shoe which is being released as part of a promotion for the upcoming Olympics in China.

Sportswear giant Nike has chosen Dancehall megastar Mavado to be a part of the largest consumer marketing campaign in the brand’s history.

Nike has commissioned Mavado to appear in an EPK (Electronic Promotional Kit) and make an original track to support the Jamaican efforts at the 2008 Olympics, starting 08.08.08 in China.
Whilst the project is part of a larger campaign that includes an original mix CD and an iTunes Asafa Powell Reggae mix, Mavado’s track, called “Faster than a Bullet,” is the only original music produced for the project. The fast-paced beat, produced by Shane Brown, provides the perfect soundbed for Mavado’s patriotic lyrics.

Mavado joins an illustrious list of music names that have collaborated with Nike, such as Nelly Furtado and Timabaland.

Footage for the EPK was directed by Ras Kassa and will be turned into a viral campaign via Nike’s own websites and a myriad of other websites and blogs. Two edits will be made - 30 seconds and 5 minutes, and includes the fastest man on the planet, Asafa Powell, meeting his musical hero Mavado.

Nike made a limited number of sneakers to help promote the campaign, which when leaked to the internet caused a frenzy, including people calling Nike to see if they will be made available at retail. Nike does not do endorsement deals with Entertainment personalities, just athletes, so they will remain as coveted limited edition sneakers.

“Having Nike choose Jamaica’s athletic superstar alongside one of Jamaica’s biggest Dancehall stars is a huge statement,” said Mavado’s manager Julian Jones-Griffith. “Having the two of them representing Jamaica and the one of the most recognized brands in the world on a global stage illustrates just how far Mavado has reached.”

Sizzla arrested and sent back to the USA

One876Entertainment.com understands that Miguel Collins a.k.a Sizza Kalonji was sent back to the United States on Wednesday after being arrested in Madrid, Spain and held for the night in jail.“Sizzla’s visa was rejected in Germany while sizzla made a break on his European tour, to play on Best of the Best in Miami. So this happened when he fly back to Europe, in Madrid-Spain, supposedly Sizzla knew nothing about his visa being canceled. So police arrested him at the airport.. he passed the night on the police station .. and today he was deported to the states, I think to Seattle.. ,” an email from Sissi Ameur, a concerned member of the European reggae community, said.

“The fire house band played a free show yesterday in Madrid but without the man. I got these information and for sure now all Sizzla shows are cancelled..,” the email concluded.

Several attempts were made to reach Sizzla’s publicist, Olimatta Taal, or any member of the artiste's camp, but we were unsuccessful.

Here is an extract from the communiqué of the Sizzla's European promoter:

Good Day All,

It is with a very heavy heart that I write this mail as it seems that all our work to get artist to be on side with the general principal of the Reggae Compassionate Act (RCA)"may" have broken down, not from our side but from the side of what it seems to be right wing elements within the xxx community.

Where we were hoping to issue a statement this evening that is no longer possible.

Sizzla tour will not continue as a direct result of what is happening in Germany and in France, we sent him the request from David (in France) and he quite rightly has decided that it seems that some people want him crucified or guillotined in public and he must pay for their transport to witness it. he has signed an agreement already that was used against him in public, world media and most embassiningly in his home, OK he admits to making mistakes since it was signed but overall he has stuck to its principles as can be verified by the authorities in the Paris show and the Dutch shows the Vienna shows etc.

Sizzla feeds many people in his community and send many to school, provides housing and money also from them, when this is taken from them because people want their pound of flesh, I personally am afraid of the result. A very angry young artist is will return to Jamaica to his people and his community and I do not want to think anything negative but I am concerned. I think you should all think long and hard about what's going on and the consequences of your actions.

WE HAVE MADE REAL PROGRESS IN THE LAST YEAR OR SO AND NOW THIS IS A SERIOUS SETBACK.

What is happening here is serious and if the German and French xxx community is responsible this will not be the last of it.We will not issue any more statements nor sign them, you are free to do as you like and call it a victory for the xxx community against freedom speech and a very popular art form attended by thousands. Now where do we go?Where indeed.

Jah Cure and Jr Reid to shoot new video

Danger Zone continues to blaze a trail, setting new trends and taking dancehall and reggae music to new frontiers. Danger Zone is currently making preparations to shoot the video for Hot Long Time which features Junior Reid and Jah Cure. The Hot Long Time video is the next step for Junior Reid coming off his award for most improved entertainer at the recently held 2008 IRAWMA Awards.

Hot Long Time was produced by Steve "Rock Star" Morales for SoBe Entertainment; Morales is famous for his work on Pop Bottles by Lil Wayne and Birdman and also has production credits on songs by Celine Dion, Christina Aguilera, Enrique Iglesias, Young Jeezy, Fabolous, Big Pun, Fat Joe, and Mario to name a few. Indeed Steve Morales is as good as they come and his production work on the Hot Long Time track is outstanding.

Hot Long Time is new ground for Jah Cure who is known for his culturally relevant reggae tunes. This is also the first time Jah Cure and Junior Reid are teaming up on a song and based on the final product won't be the last.

"It's been years I have wanted to work with Junior Reid and this is a manifestation of what we have been doing since he joined the Danger Zone/ SoBe Entertainment family. I feel very good about the song and I hope the fans will like it as well. We tried something different on this track as there is no limitation to the music and we have always tried to work with different genres to take our music to the world". – Jah Cure, Danger Zone/SoBe Entertainment Artiste.

The song Hot Long Time features Jah Cure's signature voice overlayed on a tight Hip Hop beat sprinkled with an essence of reggae. Junior Reid presents himself as a relevant artiste "ahead of the time" bringing fans back to a period when he was king and reinforcing the reason he is in such high demand internationally.

"Working with Jah Cure is a blessing as he is one of the most inspired artistes out there right now. Hot Long Time is a continuation of the work I have been doing with SoBe Entertainment and Danger Zone and there is much more to come". – Junior Reid, Danger Zone/SoBe Entertainment Artiste.

The video for the song Hot Long Time will be directed by Jay-Will who just completed filming Jah Cure's last video Flyin High which featured American rapper and Sobe Entertainment CEO Stack$. The Flyin High video was premiered on '420': International Herb Day (April 20, 2008) on WorldStarHipHop.com and broke the record with 50,000 views in 7 hours and 140,000 in 19 hours.

Jay Will will also soon be filming Green Grass and Journey; both recent singles done by Jah Cure.

"It's always a pleasure to work with Danger Zone and SoBe Entertainment. The alliance is an ongoing relationship and I am presently working on a SoBe infomercial for Stack$ and some other projects with Jah Cure. The Hot Long Time video will be sizzling with special effects and imagery mimicking the songs lyrics. This is my first video with junior Reid and I feel privileged working with a legend like him and Jah Cure who is a legend in the making". Jay-Will, Noted Video Director.

The Hot Long Time video will be filmed between May 30 and June 4 throughout Jamaica and its release will be a good launching pad for Jah Cure's European tour which begins in July.

DIGICEL RISING STARS LAUNCH SUPER X-RATED

Mi go check one of mi hottie hottie cousins dem over Portmore today and mi buck up inna the Rising Stars launch outta the Mall. It come in like the whole ah town come over Portmore fi the audition because mi see crazy faces that mi know, but the audition ram up bad, at least 750 plus people applied. Many of them shouldn’t even have bothered to assail our ears with their offerings but there is just no accounting for taste. Still, it was good for plenty of yucks. One of the funniest moment was when a young girl made the questionable decision to sing Lady Saw’s ‘If the Man left, anno my p___y fault’. As you can well imagine, she was quickly ushered away. Another girl sang the unbeeped version of a Mavado song that chronicles the sexual act in teeth-grating detail, she too was quickly yanked offstage. I can’t wait to see the edited version of this show.

MALE MODEL CAUGHT SHOPLIFTING

Ah which big model from a well-known local modeling agency was apprehended in London recently after he was caught shoplifting. Rumour has it that the male model went into the high-end store and tried on about 10 pairs of shoes, but had slyly left his own shoes in one of the boxes, and walked out in a pair of expensive Oxfords before the store security officers caught up with him. Good try, old man, good try. But it just underlines that old maxim, you can never trust a male model.

GHETTO GAL HAVE THE WICKEDEST SLAM

New home for Dutty Fridaze

The popular weekly party Dutty Fridaze, usually staged in Fletcher's Land, will move from its regular venue to Hellshire Beach in Portmore, says promoter Wayne '2 Gran' Bartley.
"Dutty Fridaze will be heading to Hellshire starting this Labour Day, May 23. That will be the new home, Hellshire Beach, every Friday," he said.

Bartley says the idea to change the venue came about after failure to get a permit to stage the event from the police. This caused the promoters to put off the event indefinitely.

Since the flare-up of violence in the division, Dutty Fridaze has suffered, as the event has not been held for more than a month.

"Di police nuh wah give us nuh permit because a di violence a Southside and Tell-Aviv. Dem nuh wah nuh no war ting go bruk out," he said.

Bartley says Hellshire was chosen as the venue because he wanted a different vibe.
"What we were looking for was a venue in Kingston that had a beach type of vibes and we thought Hellshire would be the right place to bring that vibes and the venue nuh attract a lot of night noise," he said.

Adding, "We recently kept a beach party a Portland and the vibes and attitude weh di girls dem bring did mad. A da vibes deh we did a look for to add to Dutty Fridaze."

Despite the fact that most of his regular attendees are from Fletcher's Land, Bartley says, "We also have a lot of people weh support wi wey travel from Portmore and other districts to come to Dutty Fridaze each week, so we'll have the support."

Bartley says for the first three weeks to a month, he will be providing free bus transportation from Fletcher's Land for persons wanting to attend the event.

Dutty Fridaze and other weekly events have been affected by the recent enforcement by the police of the 2 a.m. lock-off time for all dances and events.

'I'm not mad' - Don Corleon denies rumours of illness

Producer Donavon 'Don Corleon' Bennett has spoken out against what he calls 'stupid' rumours regarding his mental state.

The producer says, contrary to widespread rumours, he is not a patient at a mental institution. This is the second time in two weeks that he has had to deny the rumour.
Speculation has been running rampant on the Internet and radio over the last two days that Corleon was committed to Ward 21 at the University Hospital of the West Indies. The rumour cites that the producer was being treated at the institution because he was in a deranged state of mind and imagining things.

Corleon, who is the owner of Vendetta Studio, firmly denies being a mental patient.
"That's stupid because I was in America for a week and a half. So people are just talking things. The only thing I am mad about is music," he told The STAR yesterday.

When asked how the rumour got started Corleon said, "Mi couldn't tell yuh why dem a seh dat. Mi woulda love fi know to, bout mi mad. Wi need fi uplift one another as Jamaican, a dat wi need fi do."

Only last week it was being rumoured that Don Corleon was at odds with Munga Honourable, for whom he has produced songs like Bad From Mi Born, Wine Pon It, Talk Dem A Talk, Flipping Rhymes, Nuh Fraid and Take My Place.

He dispelled these claims saying, "I think that the reason for this is people didn't see him on my new riddim 'Double Joint', so people jump to conclusions."

Don Corleon was also quick to dismiss the another rumour that he married singer Alaine at a secret ceremony held in The Bahamas last weekend. He says this is just another thing that people have made up.

Nonetheless, he continues to make sweet music with her as, together, they produced a one-drop rhythm called 'Secrets'.

"I heard her playing something on the piano so I told her to let us make a rhythm off it. She is just another musician and she is my artiste," he said.

The rhythm features artistes like Queen Ifrica, Pressure, Morgan Heritage, D-Major, Jah Cure, Alaine, TOK and Buju Banton. It will be released within a week.

The Vendetta camp, including Munga, Pressure, Alaine and Don Corleon, will leave for a Japanese tour on Tuesday, after which they will head to Los Angeles.

Don Corleon was also proud to say that a video would be shot for Girlicious' Leave You Alone. The music was done by him while the lyrics were done by Pressure. The band Girlicious came out of an American reality TV series aired on CW Network that was created by the Pussycat Dolls.

U.S. Gnarls Barkley shot video in Tivoli Gardens

When talents from overseas, especially from a different genre of music turn to Jamaica for that missing element from their product, it means we have something unique and good on our island.

The latest such move was made by popular United States duo Gnarls Barkley, an American musical collaboration between multi-instrumentalist and producer Danger Mouse (Brian Burton) from New York, and rapper/vocalist Cee-Lo Green (Thomas Callaway), from Atlanta. The duo shot their latest video for the single Going On, in Kingston, Jamaica including Tivoli Gardens. The video includes Jamaican dancers and popular dances.

The single is off their latest album, The Odd Couple and the video was directed by Wendy Morgan of Revolver Films in Canada.

According to Zimbio.com, “The story of the video is: “A group of friends celebrate their discovery of a portal to another dimension. Led by their fearless young leader, they travel to the sacred destination. What lies on the other side no one knows…”Going On might be the hottest track on Gnarls Barkley's new album--it grabs you in the first 10 seconds.”

Kartel's Money Fi Spend #1 for two weeks

Jamaican dancehall artiste Vybz Kartel scored his first number one for the year 2008 with the single, Money Fi Spend on the Big Ship label. The single, propelled by excellent street play and brisk sales, knocked Harry Toddler off the top of the Jamaica Music Countdown charts two weeks ago and continues its strong run.

Last year, Kartel scored two number ones last year with Wine Pon You and Beyonce Wine. In the meantime, his other singles such as Trailer Load A Money hit the top ten of the RE TV charts and is poised to become a monster hit this Summer, while Nah Go Nowhere is number 8 on the Jamaica Music Countdown chart.

He has attended workshops put on by the US Embassy geared towards reaching out to disenfranchised youths and he has donated computers to high schools in need of equipment.

The deejay has been turning his attention to projects such as the promotion of his Vybz Rum liquor, as well as playing a role to help decrease the level of violence in the society. He recently personally bankrolled a series of radio commercials which were in effect public service announcements decrying violence on ZIP FM.

He has done this for the past four weeks, paying for the commercials out of his own pocket.

"We have to make an effort to reach the disenfranchised youths in Jamaica, to make them understand that crime and violence is not the answer, life is more than just guns and badness...there are many opportunities out there and other ways for them to exist and express themselves," he said.

Other stakeholders are responding. Jaevion Nelson of the Jamaica Youth Advocacy Network, will be using the PSA as part of a workshop at Youth Opportunities Unlimited on healthy lifestyles this Saturday.

" I heard it on the radio two Sundays ago - and thought it is a great effort that must be lauded, supported and sustained," he said.

Vybz Kartel is also maturing as a businessman, scoring his first major endorsement deal with a beverage company. He remains enthusiastic about the prospects for the liquor's success.

"This represents a great opportunity for me and for the dancehall community to show Corporate Jamaica that the industry can be taken seriously as a viable economic force because of the influence and power that dancehall wields as an art form in Jamaica. We will be going all out to make Vybz Rum a big success," he said.

The product, called Vybz Rum, will be Kartel's first licensing agreement, and his first major endorsement with a beverage company. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. The liquor is distributed by Betco. Premier Limited.

Mavado 'Lock and Load' with 50 Cent's G-Unit

Jamaican dancehall artiste, David ‘Mavado’ Brooks seem to have taken on one characteristic of water, moving around obstacles in his way. One876Entertainment.com understands that Mavado has been recruited for an appearance on US-based, G Unit's second album, "Lock and Load," which is slated for release later this year.

G Unit is led by the indomitable 50 Cent and made up of Tony Yayo, Lloyd Banks and Young Buck. They shifted two millions copies of their 2003 debut album "Beg For Mercy." The step out adds to a growing list of Hip Hop luminaries, such as Jay Z, Busta Rhymes, Foxy Brown, Wyclef Jean and Uncle Murda who have been eager to collaborate with the Dancehall superstar.

"Its another great endorsement for Mavado," manager Julian Jones-Griffith told One876Entertainment.com. "The other day Jay Z was telling Mavado he has taken dancehall to a whole other level, bringing Jamaican music to the ears of people who don't usually listen to the genre. Unfortunately Mavado had to miss the Madison Square Garden gig with Jay Z through his current situation, but as soon as Mavado is ready to travel Jay wants him to fly up and meet him.”

“It’s ironic how all these publications and icons around the world are showing him so much love and in his own country Mavado and dancehall music in general is facing such a battle." he continued.

DEFINING A LOUDAS
Racquel, a loudas or a deafas is a quaint colloquial term used to define an extreme form of physical assault where one individual slaps another in the face with great force. This is not a normal 'bitch-slap', but one done with great violence and force so that it echoes and can be heard within a radius of ten to fifteen metres, hence the term loudas. When the said act causes a slight injury to the ear whether from the blow striking an ear, or the subsequent echo being so loud as to damage the ear drum, it is then referred to as a deafas. There ends this morning's etymological lesson on Jamaican slang terms.

QUESTIONS ANSWERED
No, it is not Elephant Man's babymother who was killed.

Don and Alaine married in secret ceremony

Industry insiders claim that Don and Alaine got married in a private ceremony in Bahamas recently and she has been spotted wearing an expensive rock around Jamaica’s Corporate Area.

But why did Don and Alaine have to jet off to some exclusive location to tie the knot. It is not as if the local paparazzi would be hounding you for the photographs to sell to the highest bidder.

Though we haven't received any confirmation form both parties, we say congratulations on your recent nuptials, and all the best to both of you. May all your troubles be little ones. Cheers from One876Entertainment.com.

The lightning Bolt strikes again

Almost one year to the date when he broke the National 200 metres record Usain "Lightning" Bolt struck up an awe inspiring performance at Kingston's National Stadium, at the Jamaica International Invitational Games on Saturday, May 3.

A plethora of stars including the World Championship and Olympic medal winners from the United States, Tyson Gay, Wallace Spearmon and Sanya Richards led the way for the "Stars and Stripes" against Usain Bolt, Danny Mcfarlane, Veronica Campbell-Brown, and Deloreen Ennis-London, wearing the black green and gold representing the, "likkle but we tallawah", Jamaica in the three hour clash.

The fact that all the big name MVP runners; Micheal Frater, Bridgette Foster-Hylton, Sherone Simpson and the world's fastest man, Asafa Powell, stayed away, the I.A.A.F area permit meet was a quality one nonetheless.

The spectators came, saw and left relieved, if only for the fact that the former Willliam Knibb High school runner, Usain Bolt, shattered the field in the men's 100 metres, setting a world leading and mind boggling 9.76 seconds coming 200th of a second within the world record held by his campatriot Asafa Powell's 9.74 seconds set in Reti, Italy last year.

The 21 year old Bolt who had a less than explosive start powered past the field which included the Americans; Wallace Spearman, Darvis Patton and Kim Collins and with 35 metres to go shut down the acceleration just before crossing the line in the second fastest time of all time over the distance.

Bolt who ran with a legal trail wind of 1.8 metres per second, got home ahead of Darvis Patton 10.08, and the Antiguan Daniel Bailey 10.12 seconds, as Spearman and Collins had to settle for positions five and six down the track.

Bolt later did a victory lap and got vociferous congratulations for the spectators who witnessed the feat.

Later, while speaking to YardFlex, Bolt said, 'I came into the event expecting a sub 10 seconds clocking, but I am still surprised at the world mark, as both my coach and I were looking at around 9.80 seconds' .

The former Junior record holder whose two previous best times over the distance stood at 10.03 seconds, explained that he is still not sure that he will be running the 100 metres at the National Trials in Jamaica ahead of the Beijing Olympic Games.

Bolt added that 'my coach and I will meet soon and we will discuss the possibility of incorporating more 100 metres events in the International Itinerary, but right now it's a case of wait and see'. Asafa Powell could not be reached for a comment on Bolt's world class run.

Bolt's next 100 metres run will be at the Hampton Games, in Trinidad, on May 17, before he meets the World Championship triple gold medalist. Tyson Gay, over the distance at the Reebok Games, in New York, on May 31.

Buju and Wayne Wonder rock Mother's Day show at MSG

Reggae "Icons" Buju Banton, Super Cat and Barrington Levy are not exactly the perfect lineup for your mama on Mother's Day. Billed as "The Ultimate Mother's Day Show," the jampacked theater at the famed Madison Square Garden was in for a treat however when romantic crooner Wayne Wonder made a surprise appearance at the highly anticipated "Icons" concert on Saturday, May 10.

In town for two shows this past weekend, Wonder first balanced out the program, performing along with Tony Matterhorn on Friday night at Baruch College in Manhattan. Then after wooing the ladies at MSG on Saturday evening, he made another featured appearance in Brooklyn, officially bringing in Mother's Day with some of his longtime supporters.

Wonder has been consistently touring since the release of his album, FOREVA, back in September, and a return to the New York scene is more of a welcome home for the singer, who first called the Big Apple home after relocating from Jamaica.

The "Icons" show at MSG was not without its hitches, as numerous members of the audience prematurely departed the venue after Super Cat hit the stage at the end of the show, mouthing off opinions they obviously disagreed with.

However the surprise guests, including Wonder, Tarrus Riley who also brought the house down after Banton's set, and a sneak attack of dancehall's newest star Erup right before Cat's set, all served up a memorable time for patrons.

So even though initially billed as a Mother's Day show, the ladies in attendance were definitely pleased if the screams that welcomed Wonder's surprise set in the middle of Banton's act was any indication. Backed up by Banton's Shiloh band, it seemed like time froze as Wayne and Buju took the audience down memory lane with the eternal "Forever Young," and their hit duet "Bonafide Love," which was one of the few times the entire audience sang along, screaming word for word, then erupted into an uproar when Wonder and Banton switched roles, with Banton singing and Wonder chatting, bringing out his alter ego deejay Surpriz.

Show promoter Dahved Levy says there is always a surprise in store for the audience at his shows. "My favorite moment is when I first walked onto the stage and saw the beautifully dressed Caribbean people packing the Garden up to the rafters," says Levy. He recently put on a soca extravaganza with Machel Montano and friends back in March. With the promised reggae icons and the ones who showed up, this show indeed turned into the ultimate Mother's Day show.

Fashion Indeed Blocked, Montego Bay

Western Jamaica got a premier serving of the trendiest and hippest fashion affair, Fashion Block, Montego Bay, on Saturday, May 3, cost free. Over 10,000 massive came out to view this phenomenal occasion, courtesy of international fashion expertise of the Saint International team.
"The Menswear fashions were a big hit with the audience, as well as the Dexter Pottinger's Digicel couture pieces," said a satisfied Deiwght Peters, CEO of Saint International. "It was also much bigger than the previous ones, with over 12,000 high energy persons witnessing the iconic event".

Fashion Block is normally accommodated over the Easter weekend but this year's event was not at all affected by this change. "I think the timing this year made this year even better than the previous Fashion Blocks we've had in Montego Bay, and the support received from their business sector, especially those on Gloucester Avenue, truly propelled the success of this year's event," commented Peters.

With a sharp eye for talent, Peters grasped the opportunity to recruit two new young ladies (Melanie Ribbe and Ann Marie Lumsden), who were offered Saint contracts right then and there. Peters hopes to groom them into the success stories of top international model Canise Campbell, who won the very first Faces of Summer competition and was also discovered in Montego Bay.

Next year, Fashion Block MoBay will be an even grander spectacle and is anticipating getting even more support from the business sector of Montego Bay. But special thanks goes out to Digicel, Sunday Herald, Zip FM, Linkz 96 FM, TVJ Electrotech, Ping 's Fabric, Nationwide Radio, Knutsford Express, Mitsubishi, Coral Cliff, The Brewery, Tony's Pizza and Wexford Court.

With the rational and objective of introducing Western Jamaica to local designers, Fashion Block, Mo'Bay is indeed becoming a worldwide calendar event, and this year, it also marked the countdown of Saint International's flagship event, STYLEWEEK, which is scheduled to take place on Thursday, May 22 – Sunday, May 25, 2008.

Artistes Go All Out to Fete Mothers

One876entertainment is wishing all mothers all over the world a happy Mother's Day. We asked a number of artistes how they planned to spend this Mother's Day, and we got some colourful responses.

Vybz Kartel a.k.a Addi Di Teacha, is planning to chill out with one of his babymothers.
"I am just going to be chilling with my babymom Sophia at home, Later, I am gonna go to my moms for dinner," he said.

While Kartel is taking it easy, hardcore female deejay Danielle plans to go all out, starting with whipping up an early morning nutritious meal to give her mom a breakfast in bed.

"I am going to give my mommy the utmost attention and Iove I can give her. I am going to give her breakfast in bed, a nice meal of steamed fish, and present her with a Louis Vuitton handbag that she had wanted. In the afternoon, we're going to have a nice girlie day, with lunch and then dinner at Mac's Chophouse. She has come a far way with me, especially as a single mom, she has helped to mold me into the woman I am today, " she said.

Reggae crooner Courtney John who topped both the reggae singles and album charts this year will be missing his mother today because she is overseas on tour. Instead, he plans to spend Mother's Day with his 97 year-old grandmother.

"I plan to go check my granny in Port Maria, St. Mary. She kinda don't move around much anymore. Her name is Granny Dye Dye but we call her Granny Live Live 'cause we not into the die ting. I am just going to drive down and spend the whole day with her," he said.

In the meantime, the hardworking Anthony B who is in New York today to deal with the video shoot for a single from his upcoming Life Over Death album orchestrated a pre-emptive strike earlier this week to make up for the fact he would be away on the official Mother's Day.

"I treated her before I left to shoot my video in New York on Sunday. I carried her to Montego Bay, and paid for a full spa treatment, she did her nails and her hair. Then in the night, I took her to a really nice restaurant. Mi just decide fi go all out and treat mommy this year," he told one876entertainment.com.

Tyson Gay, Usain Bolt set for 100m Showdown

American sprint star Tyson Gay, the reigning 100-meter World Champion, and Jamaica's Usain 'Lightning' Bolt, who last weekend stunned the sports world when he ran a lighting fast 9.76 seconds, the second-fastest 100-meter dash in history, will meet at 100 meters at the Reebok Grand Prix on May 31, organizers announced.

Bolt, the 21-year-old Jamaican who took the 200-meter and 4x100-meter World Championship silver medals behind Gay in Osaka, is the 2002 World Junior Champion at 200 meters and holds the World Junior Record of 19.93 seconds for the distance.

At the Jamaica International Invitational on May 3, Bolt blazed to a 100-meter victory in 9.76 seconds, the second-fastest time in history behind only countryman Asafa Powell's 9.74, which Powell set late last summer.

Gay, who in 2007 became only the second man in history to win World Championship gold medals at 100 meters, 200 meters and the 4x100-meter relay, last year scorched the Icahn Stadium track here when he won in 9.76 seconds, which would have broken the World Record at the time had it not been for a tailwind (2.2) barely over the legal limit. After his triumph in Osaka, the 25-year-old Gay was named the IAAF Male Athlete of the Year, USOC Sportsman of the Year, Track & Field News Magazine Man of the Year and winner of the Jesse Owens Award.
The Reebok Grand Prix will begin at 5 p.m. on May 31, at Icahn Stadium on Randall's Island. On the heels of a sell-out last year, 1,500 bleacher seats have been added on the backstretch to accommodate the expected demand in this Olympic year.

Sizzla To Tour Regardless of Gay Protest

A story was released on Europe's largest gay news service, Pink News by Tony Grew, on May 6, that the interior minister informed the Lesbian and Gay Federation in Germany, that Reggae Artiste Sizzla Kalonji will not be granted a Schengen visa for his proposed European tour this month and has been refused the entry visa.

Attempts to contact the Jamaican German Embassy were futile. However, despite their claims, Sizzla and his band departed for their European tour last night for his first show in Poland on Saturday.

Sizzla and other artistes Capelton, Bounty Killer, Beenie Man, and others continue to be a target by the gay community. As a result, a Coalition to Defend the Rights of Black Businesses, Black Organizations and Reggae Artists has been formed to provide a unified voice to defend the Reggae Industry against these attacks by the Gay community and other issues.

'Marco Dean is a Sweetheart' - D'Angel Introduces Son

STAR of the Month D'Angel and her son Marco Dean share a strong connection that the artiste cherishes above everything else.
One only has to mention the name Marco Dean and D'Angel smiles. Her 18-month-old son is her main focus.

Named by his father, Moses 'Beenie Man' Davis after his deceased brother, Marco Dean is D'Angel's first and only child.

While being an artiste can be time consuming, as an entertainer and mother, time management is what keeps D' Angel going.

"I have a full-time nanny and full family support. I always make sure even if I'm busy with work that I'm home before its time to get him tucked in for bed. I try my best to spend time with him. We read together and play together. In the mornings I leave my door open since his room is next to mine he wakes me up every morning," she says.

While having more children is not a part of her immediate plans, D'Angel is focused on making the necessary provisions to give her son the things that she never had growing up.

As for Marco Dean, D' Angel told The STAR that he is a lot like his famous father.

She says, "He displays a lot of his father's personality. He loves to dance and loves music. He's loving. He's a sweetheart."

He's very humorous; he's just a whole bundle of happiness and everyone around him loves him."

With two parents in the entertainment business, can the world expect Marco Dean to have a future in the 'biz'?

While D' Angel promises to nurture his talent, she is now focused on making sure he gets a good education.

Mykal Rose ft. Damian Marley - Shoot Out (Remix)

Munga, Don fallout?

Rumours have been circulating that dancehall artiste Munga Honourable has left the Vendetta family after being dismissed as being "false" by producer Don Corleon.
The rumours had been circulating on the Internet and radio since last week that Munga and Don Corleon have parted ways.
It was reported that Munga Honourable, real name Damian Rhoden, might be leaving the record company, which he has been working with since 2005 when he recorded Bad Like I on Corleon's 'Sweat' rhythm.

Munga now works exclusively with Don Corleon with whom he recorded popular hits like Bad From Mi Born, Wine Pon It, Talk Dem A Talk, Flipping Rhymes, Nuh Fraid and Take My Place.
Unofficial reports are that an argument erupted between the two over musical matters. One entertainment website recently wrote, "the streets ah talk say Munga and Don Corleon nah link straight again because Munga waan voice fi some other producers and Don ah screw pon that. To the vibes, mi hear say dem kick off wicked and arguments and all these things."
However, when contacted about the rumours, producer Don Corleon denied that this was true. He told THE STAR, "No me and Munga is good."

Adding, "I think that the reason for this (the recent rumours) is people didn't see him on my new rhythm 'Double Joint', so people jump to conclusions."
When THE STAR tried to get a comment from Munga however, he declined to speak on the matter.

Munga Honourable recently released Spray It Like A Hose, which is also a Don Corleon production. Munga is scheduled to perform in Japan and Cayman this month and then in England in June.

IRAWMA was a Huge Success

The 27th International Reggae and World Music Awards (IRAWMA) went off without a hitch on Sunday, May 4 at the Apollo Theater in historic Harlem, New York. The red carpet arrivals were exciting as entertainers from the reggae and soca worlds turned out in their suits and gowns to mingle with media and hopefully pick up an award. This year's IRAWMA's stayed true to its name by handing out the most awards of the night to soca star Machel Montano, a true "world" artist, who also won the most coveted award of the night, the "Bob Marley Entertainer of the Year Award." Reggae stars Beenie Man (who was missing in action), Tarrus Riley, Ky-Mani Marley and Stephen Marley (also MIA) each walked away with two trophies. The ladies owned the stage that night, however, with a flawless set from "Best Female Vocalist" Etana, an exciting performance from Jadine, "The Soca Deva," and spicy appearances from dancehall queens Ce' Cile, D'Angel and Macka Diamond. The audience was also treated to a heartfelt performance from Ky-Mani Marley, with his rendition of his father's romantic "Turn Your Lights Down Low." The legendary Dean Frasier and members of Shaggy's band and Third World's band backed the entire show. The most entertaining artist of the night was Shaggy, who told the audience he had bought out the bar and drinks were on him for the rest of the night. The show ended with the customary congregation of all the entertainers joining vocal forces on stage for Bob Marley's "One Love," as the curtains came down on another successful awards show. IRAWMA president Ephraim Martin is already looking forward to a bigger and better show come next year, and thanks all the sponsors and entertainers for making this show possible.

Reggae Sumfest 2008 Alive Without Red Stripe

"Reggae Sumfest 2008 is definitely on for July 13-19, and will once again set standards as the greatest reggae show on earth", announced Johnny Gourzong, executive director of the festival.

2008 will mark the 16th presentation of the festival and, by all accounts, it's shaping up to be another first-class event. As usual, the festival will kick off with the beach party at Tropical Beach on Sunday, July 13, featuring top sound systems. On Thursday, July 17, top dancehall performers will energize the full capacity crowd, while Friday and Saturday will continue the tradition of offering the finest reggae singers and bands, alongside top international stars.

Dicigel, Ocean Spray and Air Jamaica, the JTB and VP Records have once again signed on as major sponsors of the event while for the first time, Supreme Ventures has signed on as a Silver sponsor, Red Bull has come on board as a Gold sponsor and Jamrock Magazine as a Platinum sponsor. Negotiations are underway with several other companies who have expressed interest in supporting the event. Media support is once again very strong with CVM on board as the official TV station, Irie FM as the official radio, and the Jamaica Observer as Official newspaper. In addition FAME, HYPE TV, RE TV, TVJ, Linkz FM, ZIP FM, Vybz FM, Megajamz, Buzz Magazine, Jamaican Lifestyle and Whaddat.com, have added their support to the event.

After a seven-year stint as title sponsor, Red Stripe has taken the decision not to renew their title sponsorship for 2008. Organizers Summerfest Productions report that while Red Stripe's contribution was significant and they will miss working with the company on Sumfest it will in no way deter the festival. They believe in the importance of Reggae Sumfest as a national event that contributes in a large way to the overall economy and are determined to make Reggae Sumfest 2008 a big success with the help of their current sponsors.

The line-up for Reggae Sumfest this year promises to be excellent. While not all contracts have yet been signed, a peek at the wish list for the festival revealed that the local line up promises to be as strong as ever. A long list of artists are being targeted, including Beres Hammond, Beenie Man, Buju Banton, Sizzla, Bounty Killer, Elephant Man, Mavado, Busy Signal, Jah Cure, Richie Spice, Macka Diamond, Brick & Lace, Tami Chynn, Erup, Queen I-Frica, Etana, Tarrus Riley, Anthony B, Voicemail, Vybz Cartel, Demarco, Courtney John, and Harry Toddler. No clues were revealed for the international acts, however, it was hinted that negotiations were ongoing with some very 'big names'.

So while there have been some rumblings in the music concert arena, Reggae Sumfest 2008 promises to once again surpass the standards set in previous years.

DeMarco Crafts More Than Just Beats

In Dancehall circles, the name DeMarco brings to mind an artist with a great lyrical gift. The way that he flows and rhymes is very infectious.

He has surged up the ranks with his bonafide hits, "Fallen Soldiers" and "Duppy Know Who Fi Frighten." The latter has caught the attention of international record label, Koch, which is the same stable for international stars like Sean Kingston and Ray J. The cross over appeal of Fallen Soldiers has given DeMarco a three album deal with the label.
That aside, there is a certain revelation that caught YardFlex totally by surprise during our interview with the singjay.

DeMarco is actually multi-talented! Speaking with his manager and having received confirmation from producers concerned, we found out that DeMarco is actually responsible for creating all the hottest current rhythms in Reggae music.

He began making this trek with the Side Walk University rhythm, which features Vybz Kartel's "Beyonce Wine". His dominance is now unparalleled, because he has in his catalog, the Mission rhythm featuring Mavado's "On The Roc" and Junior Gong and Stephen Marley's rhythm track, "Mission."

DeMarco created the Black Rain, featuring Busy Signal's "Pon Di Edge," The Warring 2008 Rhythm, featuring Mavado's "Money Changer," the Gang War rhythm featuring Junior Gong's "One Loaf of Bread" and the Shoot Out rhythm, featuring Mykal Rose's "Police and Thief."
With a deep-seated passion that engulfs his persona, this young man stands out from the rest. With an intense love and enthusiasm for every aspect of the music business – from producing to songwriting to deejaying to engineering – Demarco has his fingers on the pulse of almost every genre of the infectious rhythms of the world. Whether it's reggae, dancehall, hip-hop or R&B, Demarco has written and produced for the best of them. Top names like Olivia, Styles P and Sean Paul have experienced his producing skills, while Bounty Killer and others have put vocals to his lyrics; and in between all that Demarco still finds time to do combinations with other artists and record his own songs!

Born in Portmore, St. Catherine, Demarco is a past student of Ardenne High School. Growing up, he used to 'play around' on a sound he and his friends created called Future Disco. It was during that time that he found out he had a great love of music. That soon led to his performing on almost every community event in his Portmore area. At age 15 he would go to Cactus nightclub and perform every at chance he got.

In 1998, Demarco migrated to the United States...New York to be exact, but he never lost his desire to be involved in the music business. He soon moved to Baltimore where he hooked up with a friend who taught him the intricacies of creating music by showing him how to mix, use the keyboard, sequence and all that complicated stuff. Demarco was so excited about learning about this other aspect of the music business that he was determined to someday produce music. However, with no funds and just a dream, Demarco started doing whatever jobs he could get in order to buy the needed equipment, one piece at a time, to set up his own studio. Soon he had all the equipment he needed to build rhythms. And that he did; night and day, in between jobs, not getting any sleep, or food for that matter...sustaining himself with only the prospect of creating a wicked riddim. When he was through with each masterpiece, he would sell the beat to rap and dancehall artistes and at other times he gave them away in a bid to promote his talent.
It worked! It really did! All those long, hard, sleepless, foodless hours in his customized home studio began to pay off. Demarco started to get attention from artists and managers who wanted him to build rhythms for them, but with limited cash, it was challenging to take his talent to that other level.

Little did he know that his luck was about to change. A friend who was quite impressed with his talent introduced him to Star Kutt Music. The principals behind the company checked out his work and immediately decided that he was worth the investment.
Demarco has not looked back since. Demarco and Star Kutt became synonymous. He began working harder than before, putting out a lot of boom rhythms in keeping up with his full calendar of commissions. He created rhythms for Styles P and Free from 106 & Park, as well as having two rhythms on Elephant Man's 'Good 2 Go' album. He also made numerous beats alongside The Soul Diggaz who are signed to Missy Elliot and were involved in the production of her last three albums.

In between creating rhythms, Demarco found the time to pen lyrics for other artists including Bounty Killer; "Warlord Reloaded" and "Hey Sexy Baby." He has also lent his vocals on a combination with Bounty Killer titled as well as Sizzla titled "Kings and Queens." Further, he has also done combinations "Them Again."
